Welcome to the Wainfleet Association of Responsible Short-Term Rentals (STRs)

iHeartRadio Interview September 12th, 2024

Protecting Our Rights, Our Homes, and Our Community

The Wainfleet Association of Responsible STRs is a registered non-profit organization committed to protecting the property rights, civil rights, and Charter rights of Canadians affected by the restrictive Township of Wainfleet Short Term Rental (STR) by-law (BLO26-2019). This by-law threatens the livelihood of property owners, small businesses, and service providers who rely on the short-term rental market to sustain their income.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to defend the rights of property owners and stakeholders in Wainfleet by challenging unjust regulations, empowering affected individuals to take legal action, and fostering a community of support and advocacy. We aim to ensure that the voices of those impacted by the STR by-law are heard, and that their hardships are recognized and addressed.

Join Us in the Fight for Fairness

The new STR by-law in Wainfleet imposes unreasonable restrictions on property owners, limiting their ability to operate short-term rentals and causing financial harm to a wide range of local businesses, including cleaners, contractors, landscapers, grocers, restaurants, farm stands, boat rentals, and, of course, homeowners. The Township has also adopted the illegal practice of double-dipping on fines, penalizing all persons on title for a single by-law infraction—resulting in double fines for husband and wife owners. This practice, which has been regularly applied in enforcing the noise by-law, raises concerns about how long it will be before similar tactics are used for other property-related infractions.

Moreover, Wainfleet property values have fallen faster and deeper than anywhere else in the Niagara region, with values currently 10% lower than the regional average. Additionally, properties in Wainfleet remain on the market for an average of 4.5 months—an alarming 2.5 times longer than the Niagara region average. These statistics underscore the devastating impact of the STR by-law on our community’s economic health.

Strength in Numbers

We believe that there is strength in numbers. By coming together, we can effectively challenge the by-law, protect our rights, and preserve the vibrant, diverse community that Wainfleet has always been. Whether you are a property owner, a business affected by the by-law, or a concerned resident, your support is crucial in this fight.

How You Can Help

We need your support to make a difference in our community. Here’s how you can get involved:

  • Join the Existing STR Lawsuit: If you’re a property owner in Wainfleet who has been harmed by the short-term rental bylaw, we invite you to join our existing lawsuit. Contact Scott William Wilson directly to get involved and help us fight for justice.

  • Express Interest in the Class Action: We’re preparing a potential class action lawsuit for businesses that have been financially impacted by the bylaw, such as cleaners, landscapers, contractors, restaurants, and others who rely on the tourism that STRs generate. If your business has suffered, please provide your name and contact information to express your interest. All details will be kept confidential.

  • Promote Our Cause: Spread the word about our efforts to your family, friends, and colleagues. The more support we gather, the stronger our collective voice will be in standing up against this unfair bylaw.

  • Support Our Cause: Public relations and media outreach are essential in our fight to protect the rights of Wainfleet homeowners. We need your help to fund our PR campaign and video production efforts. Please consider donating to our GoFundMe page—every contribution will go directly toward raising awareness and standing up against government overreach. Help us make our voices heard by supporting our media campaign today.
